Okay, my brain is fried. My memory has more holes than Chicago streets in Spring. I unfairly maligned the squirrels. I alone am responsible for the sparseness of Eranthis hyemalis blooms. Last year I divided and moved some, which completely escaped my memory until I found two little clumps under the Witchhazel.
I found all these seedlings also.
There are plenty of Eranthis. And no, I am not apologizing to the squirrels.
