African Garden + Wisteria macrostachya Blue Moon

June '13 Bloom Day
Paeonia lactiflora 'Vivid Rose'

This June has been a delight with rain and cooler than average temperatures. The weather has delayed the blooming of some plants, but has made for a glorious show of peonies, Wisteria,

Wisteria macrostachys 'Blue Moon' with Phlox pilosa 'Eco Happy Traveler' and 'Carefree Beauty' rose (far background- in bloom).

and Clematis.

Clematis 'Viola' climbing a Magnolia

This year, I'm allowing a bit of 'Viola' to scramble across the New England asters in the Nanoprairie. The only true scrambler here is Petit Faucon.

Clematis 'Evisix' Petit Faucon™

But, of course, I have to tweak that by encouraging a few vines to grow through a small obelisk.

Squirrelhaven is filled with sweet scents, but not near the Phuopsis stylosa.

It smells like skunk. On the plus side, nothing eats it.

While the other columbines are nearly done blooming, my own seed strain 'Heart of Gold' is still going strong.

Aquilegia vulgaris 'Heart of Gold'

There's a color variance in the strain now: a blue-purple bloom on some plants and a dark reddish-purple on others. I can't decide which I like better. All have mostly plain chartreuse foliage.

The woodland garden is winding down, except for the Gillenia

and this little treat, the martagon lily.

Lilium martagon album

I can't remember the last time this lily bloomed, but I know it didn't have this many buds. At one time there were three plants. Now, there is only the one. I wish I knew why it is so unreliable in my garden.

For the last photo, a combination of Knautia macedonia 'Thunder & Lightning' and Golden Spirit smokebush.

Knautia macedonia 'Thunder & Lightning' and Cotinus coggygria 'Ancot' Golden Spirit™

I'm not sure if I like this combo when the smokebush is smoking, but later in summer it's striking.
Much more is in bloom now, but there isn't time to include everything. As always, thanks goes to Carol of May Dreams Gardens for sponsoring Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day.
