Grassy Things

I don't grow many grass and grass-like plants (other than the Red Fescue and other grasses in the lawn). In the mini-prairie border is my favorite grass, prairie dropseed (Sporabolus heterolepsis). It's short stature and fountainy habit make it perfect for the front of the border.

Lost amid the chaos of the middle of the border is an expansionist colony of little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium/Andropogon scoparius). It's just starting to turn red.

In the shade garden, the native Pennsylavania sedge (Carex pennsylvanica) is starting to spread a bit. It's a quiet blender, unlike the flashy new addition to the garden, the decidedly exotic Hakonechloa macra aureola.
