3 Reasons to Like Winter in the Midwest

This week's Three for Thursday celebrates the beginning of meteorological winter yesterday. At some point, there may be a "3 Reasons to Hate Winter" post, but at least I'm starting off on a positive note. Here are three reasons to like winter:

1) Bugs - or rather the absence of them.

No irritating mosquitoes buzzing in your ear. No cucumber beetles, earwigs or Japanese beetles chomping on the plants. No hornets to attack without provocation. No invasion of little red ants. Just crisp, clean, coldness.

2) No lugging around of hoses or watering cans.

When the ground is frozen and covered with snow, there are no more worries about watering or watching plants wilt and die. Just sit inside with a nice warm drink, and watch the snowflakes dance.

3) Winter photography - while there's no bad time of day to take photos in winter because of the low angle of the light, there's no need to suffer sleep deprivation to be able to shoot during the "Golden Hour" (the hour after sunrise). Right now, I have to get up a half hour before sunrise anyway, which has allowed me to shoot some beautiful, pre-dawn skies.

Do you have any reasons to like winter?
